PHOTOGRAPHER | MULTIMEDIA STORYTELLING
Sydney Pensky is an American-Israeli freelance photojournalist and documentary photographer based in New York City, with a BA from the University of Delaware. While studying for her undergraduate degree, Sydney was already a well-known freelance photographer in her home town of Newark, Delaware, often shooting for local newspapers and magazines. After moving to New York in 2013, she immersed herself in the studio world and assisted first hand with several well known photographers, accommodating in the preparation for workshops to organising and preparing gear for Lindsay Adler, Erez Sabag and Ira Block, to name just a few, whom are known world-wide for their prestigious platforms in educational photography workshops.
With an interest and drive to promote and volunteer in humanitarian work, Sydney has specialised and photographed for Middle Eastern non-profit organizations over the past 3 years, collaborating with organisations including AIPAC, StandWithUs, and Artists4Israel; Art Healing Kits, focusing predominantly on providing information on the state of Israel in times of war and assisting the communities that are affected by its aftermath. In 2016, Sydney worked with ‘Artists4Israel’ documenting 9 graffiti artists who came from all over the world to Israel for the purpose of creating giant murals in the hope of building a sense of happiness and peace for the needy communities of Netanya, Israel. Working side by side with the children and teachers of several schools, she witnessed the direct benefit that such initiatives have on the local communities.
Thus far, Sydney has worked on assignments for NGOs as well as travel, documentary, commercial and photojournalism publications, a career that has led her to photographing in over 13 countries around the world. Her work focuses predominantly on human stories that explore societal differences, cultural diversity, and the economic effects of geographic isolation. Currently, Sydney is on the field in Itamar, Israel, documenting the daily hardships of ‘Life in the West Bank Settlements’, portraying the challenges that the nearby co-dependent Palestinian communities must endure and exploring the questions that face the settlers of this area. Her work has been published in the Municipal Art Society of New York Museum, Na’Amat USA, as well as the Daily News Journal.
