Mentorship Program to Costa Rica (Abriendo Mentes)

The NGO Photographers Alliance is excited to be holding a Mentorship program with partner organisation Abriendo Mentes, a NGO that operates in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica, working with local communities to enhance their educational and economic opportunities by directly engaging with rural and underprivileged individuals.

This Mentorship program is an intensive 7 day program combining photography workshops, private 1 on 1 mentor feedback sessions, cultural sightseeing as well as participation in NGO-related activities in conjunction with Abriendo Mentes. Participants embarking on this Mentorship Program will visit two locations where Abriendo Mentes functions – the small coastal village of Playa Potrero where Abriendo Mentes operate their flagship programs, and the tourist town of Brasilito located right next to the beach and in close proximity to Playa Potrero.

At the completion of the Mentorship program, participants should have sufficient material to begin putting together a portfolio of NGO-related photography. In addition, participants may be invited to feature their work in the pages of our affiliated travel publication The Travellist magazine.

Mentorship Program to Costa Rica

The NGO Photographers Alliance will be holding a Mentorship program with partner organisation Abriendo Mentes, a NGO that operates in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica, working with local communities to enhance their educational and economic opportunities by directly engaging with rural and underprivileged individuals. Through a variety of programs addressing both youth and adult needs, Abriendo Mentes focuses on promoting community development in the form of youth programs, adult education, methods to empower women's economic opportunities, as well as raising awareness in regards to health issues and the local environment. Abriendo Mentes operates in two areas, Playa Potrero and Brasilito, in the region of Guanacaste where children only attend school for 3 hours a day, 22% of high school students eventually drop out and 30% of Guanacastecos live in poverty. Since their inauguration in 2009, Abriendo Mentes has provided hundreds of hours in educational training and community programs, working tirelessly and diligently to support what is one of the most rural, lease densely populated and poorest regions in Costa Rica.

WHAT DOES THE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM ENTAIL?

This Mentorship program is an intensive 7 day program combining photography workshops, private 1 on 1 mentor feedback sessions, cultural sightseeing as well as participation in NGO-related activities in conjunction with Abriendo Mentes. At the conclusion of the program, participants have the opportunity to continue travelling in San José or other regions of Costa Rica and Central America.
